The Wijnhuis was established in 1997 in the charming Dorpsmeent building on Church
Street in Stellenbosch. It is a charming venue in which one can conveniently sample
wines from more than fifty (mainly) local producers. From the start the focus has
been on boutique wineries and the Stellenbosch region. This has expanded to include
token wines from other regions as well as some of the more iconic or big named Stellenbosch
wines. The Stellenbosch wine region is vast and over the past decade there has been
an emergence of architecturally remarkable wineries that make wine tours ever more
rewarding. Combined with the more historical (old French Huguenot or Cape Dutch)
and family run wineries, the region offers diversity that is not commonplace in
other wine producing areas. Uniquely one can taste as well as purchase from the wine shop or enjoy a |
glass with
dinner in the 200 seater restaurant. The menu is Mediterranean and light with daily specials making use of the region's freshest and healthiest produce.
The Wijnhuis has recently linked to the renowned SMAC art gallery in the adjoining De Wet building and has overseen the renovation of the De Wet Courtyard which is home to some of the most innovative and lively shops and cafes in the town center. Church Street has also become a shopping hub with designer clothing shops, gift shops, jewelers and the famous Ouwe Werf, the oldest inn in South Africa. All Wijnhuis wines and accessories are available from our shop and can be consigned to local and international destinations at competitive rates. |
